CT110 and CT90 Aussie Adventure

7 May

This is very inspiring for the minimalist adventurer. A large group takes off on CT110 postie motorcyles for an Aussie Adventure. I am one who likes to travel with as little support that I can. That is the reason that I chose a CT90 for Ultra Cheap Traveler. I have nicknamed him the Red Baron. Watch for more write ups on the Red Baron as I prepare him for an upcoming trip. Enough of the Red Baron, onto the cool video:

Spotting While Off Road

27 Apr

Spotters are very important while overlanding. There will be times when you will be navigating very tough terrain with absolutely no idea where exactly your tires are on the trail. Now this is not a complete guide by any means. I saw the video below and felt it was important to point out. Now before you watch this short clip, I want to make the point that my opinion is just from what is seen in the video. I was NOT there. I am merely pointing out what I seen in the actual footage.

The above footage is a great example of what not to do. The spotter should be making hand movements that instill confidence. Not constant “wavy” movements. You want them to go left, point left firmly and hold that until that movement is over. To help the driver keep from being confused, the spotter should yell out “driver” and “passenger” while pointing in the correlating direction to help confirm to the driver what to do with confidence.

Also, the spotter should have a firm footing. Do not try and give direction while looking around for a footing. If you slip, you can easily misdirect the driver. Also make sure to stay within the drivers line of vision. In the above video example, the spotter moves “driver” and far away from the trail, causing the driver to look away from the trail. I know he was getting out of the drivers way in case of roll over, but he should have been on the passenger side. The spotter would have been in a uphill position with no chance to being injured by the vehicle and would still have been in the drivers line of sight.

Disabled Explorers on CBS News

27 Apr

Disabled Explorers made it on CBS News. Lance Blair, is an amputee, an Intensive Care RN, a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, Overland Certified, a Tread Lightly Trainer, Wilderness First Responder, amateur radio operator, and a member of the winning team of the 2007 Expedition Trophy. In 2008 Lance led a Disabled Explorers team over 24 days and 5000 miles on the Continental Divide Expedition.

Lance is a great guy and has an outstanding operation! Great job on getting the coverage! You can help by buying a mile! The “Buy a Mile” program is a worthy one as evident in the below story.

I ran across this video and expedition information on internet archive. Very cool place if you haven’t been there. The Sullivan C. Richardson Pan American Highway Expedition, 1940-1941. The first of a two-part series describing the first successful attempt to drive an automobile from the United States to the tip of South America the companion is was “Rugged Road to Cape Horn.” Here, Richardson and two companions (one of whom is Arnold Whitaker) explore the route that would eventually become the Pan American Highway. In many cases their Plymouth sedan is towed by men and burros through difficult terrain. On the way, they visit Mexico City and meet President Miguel Alemán. Visits Monte Albán, Like Atitlán in Guatelama, and shows hat weaving in El Salvador. More about Sullivan Richardson at: www.focalint.org/azarticle3.htm
