When Dutch Oven Cooks Compete

27 Nov

Your knives. Are they already ready? If they are, then you should have been able to hear about this cooking event which happened a few weeks earlier. Maybe you may even have been part of that. After all, cooking events do not happen that often and when they do, people who are into the craft run in flocks to be part of that.

Now this cooking event has happened at the Carson City Rendezvous. And it was organized by the Cast Iron Cooks of the West and they have been able to cook up such an event because they would like to showcase the people who have the talent to do so. It has been said that such is an event that is held as part of an event. And those who are willing to show off what they have been blessed with can take part in it. It is actually a contest so the person with the best skills took home the prize.

At the organization of the mentioned contest, the organizers have said that beginners should not think twice about joining. They have mentioned that during the past, anyone who could cook well have won and the list of winners have actually included beginners even. Those who have had real good experience have surely won but it was really quite a joy to find the season ones getting beat by the new ones. It also has been stated that it also does not matter how old the contestants are because there is a contest for those who are over 18 and another contest for those who are younger. Individuals and groups have been also allowed to join.

The competition is not just about being able to cook a dish. The organizers have thought of various categories and the list included cooking a main dish, cooking bread, and cooking desserts. There is also a breakfast category where the contestants had to concoct a dish to be served for breakfast.

It was a Sunday when the whole event was held and people who were there had a grand time. It did not matter if the contestants were really experienced with Dutch ovens or if they still needed the help of a Dutch oven recipe book or a Dutch oven ebook. What was important was the end product and that they were able to showcase something that was worth noting and remembering.

For Tricia, the home is the best place to be.

Did You Ever Wonder About Dutch Oven Cooking Over Coals?

10 Nov

Just like convection cooking a dutch oven is nothing more or less then a cooking pot. It is an iron, most of the times cast iron, thick walled cooking pot that has a lid that is tight fitted. In the past, dutch oven cooking over coals would mean that the whole pot, even the lid, was covered with coals just to make sure that the heat would be all around the pot. When you buy a dutch oven these days it will have legs to hold it above the coals. You will even see that a flange is added to keep the coals out of the food. This type of cooking is a slow and intense process.

Roasting

A very popular way of cooking with a dutch oven is using it to prepare a roast. The oven will make sure that the meat is evenly cooked because of the thick walls which makes it very insulated. It is a delicious way of cooking and all the juices will absorbed by the meat, because it is a closed system they are steamed up and fall down on the roast again. All the flavors of the vegetables and all the spices that are there in the pot together with the meat will circulate together and are going to be present in every bite you take.

So you see that dutch oven cooking over coals can really be ideal for the next time you think about getting a roast done for the family. It will be hard to overcook and get a dry piece of meat.

A stew

Using a dutch oven for your stew is, of course, perfect just for the fact that a stew needs to simmer slowly. The combination of liquid and solid food, using meat or seafood, vegetables and spices all together slowly cooking in this oven is just perfect. All the flavors of all these ingredients will melt together and the lid on the oven will make sure that it doesn’t cook dry.

A Casserole

You will find that a casserole is not that different from a stew, the only difference being that the the meat and vegetables are cut in smaller pieces. A casserole often is served in the dish in which it was cooked. A dutch oven is a perfect piece to put on the table and even more perfect to cook your casserole in.

When your an outdoor person and go camping a lot it will be nice to know that dutch oven cooking over coals can also be done on the camping site. The newer ovens are designed to be more convenient in this way but still have the same basic functions.

Just give it a try, if you have never done this type of cooking try and find people who have experience with it and ask them for advice. Ones you see, and most of all, taste what you can create with a dutch oven you will never do it any other way. Your table guests will love you for it.

Dutch Oven Cooking

31 Oct

In the Australian bush, the Dutch oven is popularly known as “camp oven,” in Japan it is the “tetsunabe” and for the French it is simply known as the “casserole dish.” But what is a Dutch oven? A Dutch oven is a type of cast iron cookware. This type of cookware is perfect for camping and outdoor cooking.

Camp cooking has always been fun and enjoyable. Most of us think that having a Dutch oven means that cooking outside of the house would be very limited since you are away from your kitchen stove. What makes it so special is that the Dutch oven can cook almost anything under the sun.  You can basically bake, roast, or fry by means of adjusting its temperature. Since the Dutch oven is made out of thick cast metal, it is said that it distributes heat equally making the food very hot and flavourful. In order for you to maximize the use of the Dutch oven, you must first choose a very good kind of Dutch oven.

Selecting a Dutch oven mostly depends on your needs. Just like choosing any other cookware, you do not choose to fry eggs in a Dutch oven when you have a frying pan already. The camp oven comes in two (2) types: the Aluminum and Cast Iron. The Aluminum is obviously heats fast and is lighter making the food susceptible to burn easily while the Cast Iron is conducts heat slower and evenly and is heavier. Many people prefer the Cast Iron Dutch oven compared to the Aluminum Dutch oven. It is also important to select a Dutch oven which has three short fat legs making it sturdy and stable when placed under heated coals. You may also choose an oven with a lid so that you may also place hot coals on top of it.

The Dutch oven comes also in different sizes to gauge how many people you are going to cook for.

a)      Two (2) quarts – 8 inches: this is ideal if you are going to cook for two (2) persons only.

b)      Four (4) quarts – 10 inches: this can accommodate a recipe that is good enough to feed up to six (6) persons.

c)       Six (6) quarts – 12 inches: good for fourteen (14) people.

d)      Eight (8) quarts – 14 inches: good enough for twenty (20) people.

Experts say that if you are just with a very small group, the eight (8) or ten (10)-quart size is best. It will be very convenient to bring since it is not that heavy compared to other sizes.

The Dutch oven is practically a very good piece of cookware you might consider having since you can use it at home and outdoors. And because camping outdoors is a good time to bond with family and friends, bring in a Dutch oven and cook them a very delicious meal that will surely make your adventure memorable.
